Being a Tom Clancy fan, I couldn't wait to see this latest installment of his character Jack Ryan. Consequently, the character of Jack Ryan has been portrayed in other films by Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford(Patriot Games & Clear and Present Danger) and Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears). "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" takes us back to the humble beginnings of how the US Marine Ryan becomes involved with the CIA. Recruited after a horrible accident in Afghanistan, Ryan (Chris Pine) is relentlessly pursued by Thomas Harper (Kevin Costner) to thwart the Russians plans for a terrorist attack that could ultimately result in crashing the US economy. Clocking in at a little under two hours...the time flew by and found myself waiting eagerly for the next scene, but I have to be content to wait for the sequel.
It was refreshing to see Keira Knightly NOT in a period piece, using an American accent and being very effective as fiancé for the lead character and watching her her go toe to toe with the phenomenal talent of Kenneth Branagh as Ryan's nemesis Viktor Cherevin. Having also been a fan of Branagh's as a director and actor, his work in the latest Tom Clancy incarnation was fantabulous and I am keeping my fingers crossed that he directs the sequel. Of course, it goes without saying that my childhood crush of Kevin Costner is still intact...as in my opinion he can DO NO WRONG...LOL. Chris Pine, illustrates once again why he makes a perfect leading man under any circumstance. I was a believer when I saw him in STAR TREK last year, but now I am a forever fan.
If you are an action-adventure junkie, you will have a great ride with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit. It will be over before you know it and you will find yourself thirsting for more:)
