2014 Essence Awards Luncheon

ImageJust a few days ago...ESSENCE held its 7th Annual Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon to honor the top African American women in the film industry this year.

Oscar-nominated actress Lupita Nyong'o, Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences President Cheryl Boone Isaacs and award-winning director/writer Ava DuVernay will be presented with awards by some of their equally impactful peers including Sidney Poitier, Oprah Winfrey, Alfre Woodard, Kerry Washington, David Oyelowo, Spike Lee, Tonya Lewis Lee and Danai Gurira. 

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the event will also pay tribute to legendary performers who served as champions of the Civil Rights Movement including Nichelle Nichols, Jim Brown, Denise Nicholas and Clarence Williams III, among others. 

The grand celebration is a part of ESSENCE's commitment to uplift the Black women in Hollywood who are making strides in front of and behind the camera. Special guests included Kelly Rowland, Angela Basset, Regina King, Brandy Norwood, Gayle King, Loretta Devine and many, many more.

Formerly of UBNRAdio.com, where I Co-Hosted "On Air With Tony Sweet", this Fall, I will be hosting a new show for Black Hollywood Live owned by E! Correspondent Maria Menounos  and am a freelance contributor for NPR's Weekend All Things Considered.
