#TBT Diary of A Mad Black Woman

When I was in The Lion King, one of my good girlfriends loved these plays featuring a character named  Madea from a then unknown actor/producer Tyler Perry.  Millions of people across the country came out to see Madea and one of the first of many to be adapted to the big screen was Diary of a Mad Black Woman.  It starred Kimberly Elise, Cecily Tyson, Shemar Moore, Steve Harris and Tyler Perry as Madea.

It basically follows the journey of a black woman who is mad as hell about the way she has been treated by men until she meets "the one" who changes everything.  The film garnered NAACP Image Awards for both Cicely Tyson and Kimberly Elise and grossed over 55 Million proving to Hollywood for the first time in a long time that films starring black actors was a force to reckoned with at the box office.

Perry, now has multiple shows on television being showcased on Oprah Winfrey's channel OWN and include The Have and Have Nots, Love Thy Neighbor and several others on the grid to debut.

#TBT Mr. Holland's Opus

  Mr_Hollands_Opus

Richard Dreyfuss is unarguably one of the most passionate actors to come out of the 29th century.  His name alone would attract Oscar buzz.

With all the Oscar buzz these days swirling around J.K. Simmons for Whiplash, let'r roll it back to 1995 and Mr. Holland's Opus. Dreyfuss  portrayed Glenn Holland, a frustrated composer who finds another career being a high school music teacher to perfection was nominated for the Golden Globe and Oscar for his performance.  This film also showcased the talents of a young Terrence Howard and William H. Macy.

Christmas Top Ten Throwback #10: How the Grinch Stole Christmas

images There are many Christmas stories that air during this time of year, but my all time favorite is How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  Why?  It's like a modern spin on the old Dickens tale A Christmas Carol, but with cartoons.  Cindy Lou Hoo is Tiny Tim and the Grinch is Scrooge.  Get it?  I knew that you would :)

I especially enjoyed the vocal stylings of the late Boris Karloff as The Grinch, who at that time was mostly known for starring in horror flicks.

images-1

However, what I cherish the most is the message that Christmas is the one time of year even the most cynical of human beings has a heart.  A lesson that is so sorely needed in today's world.

To date, the Grinch story has been made into a feature film with Jim Carrey and a Broadway musical

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Feliz Navidad and Happy Holidays from Dr. Seuss' holiday classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas...

#TBT Dumb and Dumber

Dumb-and-dumber-poster Holiday season in 1994, Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey released a film about two goodhearted, incredibly stupid best friends traveling cross country.  Carrey had cornered the market on this band of acting going all the way back to his day on the sketch-comdy series In Living Color and Daniels was mostly known for his dramatic film roles (remember Terms of Endearment?).  Lauren Holly fresh off of a slew of Lifetime tv movies and a regular gig on the ABC-TV soap All My Children when sh repaired up this unlikely duo.

#TBT: Nell

Unknown 1994 was a great year for movies and an especially good  year for Jodie Foster.  For those who don't know, Jodie burst onto the scene as a child star in Maritn Scorsese's Taxi Driver making her a star.  However, it was her role as Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs that turned her into an international superstar.  These days, Foster uses her talent as a much sought after director and has helmed many episodes of the hit Netflix series, Orange is the New Black.

But, in 199r she starred in Nell portraying a beautiful young hermit woman with many secrets and racking up many nominations, including one for the Academy Award.

#TBT Shawshank Redemption

UnknownThe Shawshank Redemption is a 1994 American drama film written and directed by Frank Darabont and starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. Adapted from the Stephen King novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, the film tells the story of Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) a banker who spends 19 years in Shawshank State Prison for the murder of his wife and her lover despite his claims of innocence. During his time at the prison, he befriends a fellow inmate, Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding (Morgan Freeman) and finds himself protected by the guards after the warden begins using him in his money laundering operation.

images

Despite a lukewarm box office reception that barely recouped its budget, the film received multiple award nominations and outstanding reviews from critics for its powerful acting and realism. It has since been successful on cable television, VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray. It was included in the American Film Institute's 100 Years...100 Movies 10th Anniversary Edition.

The film was nominated for 7 Academy Awards...one of many for Morgan Freeman until he finally nabbed the Oscar in the Clint Eastwood film, "Million Dollar Baby"

#TBT Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle

Unknown-5 I've mentioned before how much I adore Matthew Broderick and how special my time was with him during my Broadway debut in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.  I've also mentioned how much I adore Jennifer Jason Leigh.  So, it should come as no surprise that I ran to the theatre in 1994 to support them both in a little film called Mrs. parker and the Vicious Circle.

Unknown-6

Dorothy Parker was an American poet, short story writer, critic and satirist, best known for her wit, wisecracks, and eye for 20th-century urban foibles.  Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle introduces us to how Dorothy Parker remembers the heyday of the Algonquin Round Table, a circle of friends whose barbed wit, like hers, was fueled by alcohol and flirted with despair.

Jennifer Jason Leigh earned a Golden Globe nomination ofr her brilliant performance.  Take a peek back with Dorothy Parker and her Vicious Circle...

#TBT: The Mark of Zorro

MV5BMTEwMDc3NjQ0NjBeQTJeQWpwZ15BbWU4MDMxODQ3MDIx._V1_SX146_CR0,0,146,215_ On this date in 1920, Douglas Fairbanks' The Mark of Zorro hit the theaters.

Zorro, masked champion of the people, who appears out of nowhere with flashing sword and an athletic sense of humor, scars the faces of evildoers with his trademark "Z". Meanwhile, beautiful Lolita is courted by villainous Captain Ramon, rich but effete Don Diego... and dashing Zorro, who is never seen at the same time as Don Diego. As Zorro continues to evade pursuit, Ramon puts the damsel in distress.

Zorro solidified the "swashbuckler" rep that Fairbanks would be known for the rest of his career blazing an open trail for others to follow in his footsteps like Antonio Banderas and Sir Anthony Hopkins in a 1998 reboot for the silver screen.  This was also the first time we were introduced to Catherine Zeta-Jones, who would go on to win an Academy Award for Velma Kelly in the screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Chicago.

#TBT: The Santa Clause

unknown-4.jpeg

images-2 On Christmas Eve, Scott reads The Night Before Christmas... then receives an unexpected visitor on his roof. When he's startled by Scott's calling out and falls, the Santa impersonator disappears, leaving only an 8-reindeer sleigh and a suit with instructions to put it on if he's involved in an accident. Scott does, and is transported around the town dropping gifts through chimneys until he's taken to the North Pole and informed by a group who claim they're elves that he is now Santa.

Scott's convinced it's a dream until his hair turns white, his beard refuses to stay shaved and he gains weight. Now that he's accepted it, there's just one problem: how to keep it secret from his disbelieving family?

At the time The Santa Clause was released, Tim Allen was riding high on the success of his hit tv sitcom...Home Improvement.  The Santa Clause along with a few voice gigs on Toy Story catapulted into him superstardom AND has birthed two more sequels of the unsuspecting guy who becomes Santa.

On the eve of yet another holiday season, let' take a look back at The Santa Clause...

#TBT Anne Rice's: Interview of the Vampire

images Zombies weren't  always the hottest commodity on screen.  Hollywood has always been fascinated with vampires dating all the way back to Bela Lugosi as Dracula and Anne Rice, known as the "Queen of American Gothic Fiction",  hit pay dirt when her Interview with the Vampire novel was picked up and directed by Frankenstein helmer Kenneth Branagh.   It starred Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and a very young Kirsten Dunst (who was nominated for a Best Supporting Golden Globe Award).

#TBT Bullets Over Broadway

bulletsIt is no secret that I am a huge fan of filmmaker Woody Allen.  So, when I learned that one of his films would deal with the theatre world in New York of the 1920's...I was chomping at the bit to see it and I was not disappointed. Bullets Over Broadway is literally what the title implies when a mobster forces the hand of a struggling playwright to put his talent free girlfriend in the play he's bankrolling.  The comedy that ensues from this situation will put your stomach in knots from laughter.  Starring  John Cusack, Jennifer Tilly, Chazz Palminteri, the film brought home a Best Actress Oscar for Dianne Weist.

Just last year, Allen adapted his own screenplay for the Broadway stage.  Unfortunately, by this time Allen had the stigma of being married to his step-daughter hanging over his head.  Not to mention that right before the musical choreographed by Tony Winner Susan Stroman, another Allen child, Dylan, began to speak out about other alleged abuses with him.  In my humble opinion, this may have tainted any hope of success with the musical and it closed even before the Tony Awards ceremony occurred.

#TBT Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

Unknown Get ready for a lot more monsters!!!  In addition to Universal’s plan to reboot their classic monster movies, we’ve also got a Fox “grounded sci-fi drama” Frankenstein via a put pilot commitment.  Apparently the show will pull from the Mary Shelley mythology and follow what happens when a corrupt FBI agent is brought back to life and given a second chance.

Unknown-1

According to Deadline, Frankenstein will focus on a guy named Adam Tremble, a morally crooked FBI agent who dies, but is ultimately brought back to life by an “antisocial Internet billionaire” and “his bio-engineer twin sister.

However, back in 1994, director Kenneth Branagh brought the Mary Shelley novel to life AGAIN with a feature starring himself, Robert DeNiro, Helena Bonham Carter and Tom Hulce.  It was not well received by critics at the time and let's assume it is a credit that all of them will soon want to forget.

#TBT Pulp Fiction

pulp_fiction_ver3_xxlgI was in rehearsal for the 1st revival of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying and the buzz in rehearsals was about this new filmmaker that had this edgy new film with John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson.  We all knew John Travolta's work and Samuel L. Jackson was coming off of massive success with then newbie director Spike Lee in such films as Jungle Fever and Do The Right Thing. So we all piled up in cars and headed to the nearest movie theatre to see it.  I immediately got the comedic elements and the irony of the whole flawed hit man with biblical backgrounds and laughed my booty off.

The filmmaker was Quentin Tarrantino and to date has not released one film without some sort of controversy being attached to it.  His edgy out of the box directing was rewarded when he won the Oscar that year for Pulp Fiction.  Samuel L. Jackson received the first of many Oscars nominations and John Travolta was honored with his first Oscar nod since Saturday Night Fever.

#TBT Friday Night Lights

fridaynightlights High school football has long been extremely popular in Texas. The story of Permian High School's 1988 Permian Panthers team and its run towards the state championship was the subject of the best-selling book Friday Night Lights, published in 1990.  A movie based on the book was made in 2004  and boasted a cast that starred, Connie Britton, Billy Bob Thornton, Derek Luke and Tim McGraw.   Roy Williams, formerly of the Detroit LionsDallas Cowboys, and Chicago Bears, went to school at Permian and portrayed an assistant coach for Midland Lee in the movie.

Shortly thereafter in 2006,  NBC television  aired a series (of the same name) loosely based on the school and book.  Connie Britton was also in this reboot along with Kyle Chandler and my Hart of Dixie castmate -- Scott Porter.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrzvFOvow_Y

#TBT Only You

OnlyYouMoviePoster I love Robert Downey, Jr...I don't think I could ever get tired of saying that!!!  So when I found out that he and Oscar winner Marisa Tomei were starring in film TOGETHER...I was was all up in the movie theatre.

Destiny. Faith (Marisa Tomei) believes that two soul-mates can be united if they find each other. From the Ouija board, she has found the name of her missing half, and it is D-A-M-O-N.

For those of you who don't know what a Ouija board is...according to Wikipedia...

The Ouija board (/ˈwə/ wee-jə), also known as a spirit board or talking board, is a flat board marked with the letters of the alphabet, the numbers 0–9, the words "yes", "no", "hello" (occasionally), and "goodbye", along with various symbols and graphics. It uses a planchette (small heart-shaped piece of wood or plastic) as a movable indicator to indicate the spirit's message by spelling it out on the board during a séance. Participants place their fingers on the planchette, and it is moved about the board to spell out words. "Ouija" has become a trademark that is often used generically to refer to any talking board.

Following its commercial introduction by businessman Elijah Bond on July 1, 1890, the Ouija board was regarded as a harmless parlor game unrelated to the occult until American Spiritualist Pearl Curran popularized its use as a divining tool during World War I.

Mainstream religions and some occultists have associated use of a Ouija board with the concept of demonic possession, and view the use of the board as a spiritual threat and have cautioned their followers not to use a Ouija board.

Despite being criticized by the scientific community and deemed demonic by Christians, Ouija remains popular among many people.  Some contemporary users regard the Ouija Board as a harmless toy, while others believe in its use as a spiritual tool.

#TBT SHARK TALE

sharktale What happens when a son of a gangster shark boss is accidently killed while on the hunt?  His would-be prey AND his vegetarian brother both decide to use the incident to their own advantage.  This was the premise for the Dreamworks animated feature SHARK TALE featuring the voice-talents of Will Smith and Robert DeNiro.

I especially loved it because soundtrack wise, a new spin was put on a classic 70's tune - Car Wash by Rose Royce.  On the reboot, produced by Missy Elliott,  the vocal acrobatics of Christina Aguillera are in its full glory!

I guess you could say this was Dreamworks' answer to the Oscar-winning Disney/Pixar film Finding Nemo, but with a hip-hop flair.

Let's take a look back at Shark Tale and the music video that I just loved!
