#TBF Higher Learning

HigherLearning(1).jpgWith so much talk this week about Oscars and lack of diversity there was a time when things started to look up for black people in behind and in front of the camera.  Spike Lee made folks sit up and notice, but it was a homegrown Southern Californian that would push the envelope a step further . John Singleton was like a shiny, new penny in Hollywood when he burst onto the scene as the director of Boyz in the Hood, which, garnered him an Oscar nomination.  Most of his characters were from South Central L.A. and were depicting a life that most Americans were not familiar with in other parts of the country.

Singleton jump-started the careers and introduced us to Cuba Gooding, Jr., Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Ice-Cue, Regina King, Tupuc Shakur and so many more...

Later this year, Singleton is slated to direct a feature film on Tupac Shakur, who starred alongside a young Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice, in June of this year.

However, it was Higher Learning that put Michael Rapport, Kristy Swanson, Tyra Banks and pre-Oscar winning Jennifer Connolly in a drama that made us all question the knowledge.

Let's question the knowledge one more time and go back to college with Higher Learning

Review: 22 Jumpstreet

Image If you were a fan of the 21 Jumpstreet series back in the day with Johnny Depp, this film is not that.  In fact, it pokes fun at all the things that were so cool about the series, which for me makes it one of the "must-see" films of the summer.

This is truly the summer of sequels and this latest one to hit screens - 22 Jumpstreet  starring Channing Tatum (Jenko) and Jonah Hill (Schmidt) takes the duo undercover to college where they try to sniff out drug dealers.  This film was soooo funny, it brought tears to my eyes and make my belly ache!!!!

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are the perfect "buddy movie" partners and blaze the screen every time they are on it.  Ice Cube as Captain Dickson takes the black police captain stereotype to a whole new level and make us laugh "with" him not  "at" him.

Nick Offerman - what can I say "brilliant" as usual, but the standout in this film for me were four actors.  The Lucas Brothers (Keith and Kenny Yang), Wyatt Russell (Zook) and Jillian Bell (Mercedes) -- they're are all right on point...not too much - but just enough to have you rolling in the aisle.

The action sequences were pretty typical, but entertaining nonetheless.

22 Jumpstreet opens in theaters nationwide on Friday, June 13.   Check out the trailer

Review: RIDE ALONG

MV5BNjU4NzYzOTY1MF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMTAyNTc1MDE@._V1_SX146_CR0,0,146,215_Let's just say what everybody already knows...Kevin Hart is unarguably the hottest commodity in the comedy world at the moment.  In 2014, already Hart has released 3 feature films, is a series regular/execute producer of Real Husbands of Hollywood and was featured in a very successful ad campaign for Verizon and Samsung. I became acquainted with Hart when he starred on an ABC sitcom called, The Big House, but it wasn't until I worked with him on the defunct sitcom Love, Inc. that I had the opportunity to witness his genius up close and personal.  Hart has no fear, and more importantly has no problem making fun of the obvious...his height or lack thereof.

Ride Along introduces us to a security guard Ben, who in trying to prove himself to his girlfriend's brother James, spends 24 hours on a "ride along" through Atlanta with James, who is a Atlanta Police Detective.  This scenario makes for over 90 minutes of hilarious situations.  Also starring, Ice-Cube (James) and Tika Sumpter (Angela), you can see how hard they try not to burst into laughter in scenes with Kevin.  He is buck-wild!!!!  Baby, the buddy comedies are back!!!

Ride Along was so successful it grossed 149MM worldwide and has spun a sequel due to be released in 2016. It is available to rent on Vudu.com or for purchase on DVD.
